What are the traits that a creative person exhibits? Many years ago I stumbled across this article by Eugene Raudsepp in a Creative Computing magazine. It lists several attributes/characteristics that creative people seem to have in common. They are:

Sensitivity To Problems.

Fluency.

Flexibility.

Originality.

Curiosity.

Feelings And The Unconscious.

Motivation.

Freedom From Fear Of Failure.

Persistence and Concentration.

You can learn more about each of these traits in the article. Why have I posted it? If our desire is to become more creative, or stay creative, then knowing the specific traits that make up a creative individual gives us a target. As the article states: "We can substantially increase our creative capacities and performance by deliberately cultivating those characteristics we feel we lack at present or that need some dusting off."

So dust off your creative traits. Tune them up. To be a great furniture designer you'll need them all. We'll have a look at each one in future posts.

Introduction

Welcome to my new blog. Hopefully the focus of this blog will remain on furniture design, and less specifically on woodworking and product design. I am a furniture designer with degrees in Interior Architecture and Product Design. I teach taught furniture design to college students at Kansas State University in Manhattan Kansas. Students enrolled in the Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design there have to take a minimum of three design workshop/furniture design classes. I teach taught one section of each of those classes. Why blog about it? In a given semester I can could share my appreciation and understanding of furniture design with around 30 students. My goal with this blog is to spread what I love and the knowledge I've accumulated to a wider audience. Stay tuned. 

I've updated this entry to reflect the fact that I retired from teaching in 2022.
